American cornerstone

To the editor: A cornerstone of the American dream is people’s aspiration for their children to do better than themselves and the belief that it can happen. Educational opportunity is the key to making that happen, but all too often it is frustrated by failed public schools. This is especially true for black children.

In my view, the racist notion that blacks don’t share the dream or can’t fully participate is refuted by the fact that whenever opportunities for alternatives to failed public education are presented, black families immediately seize them. The results are usually very successful and often require reduced public expenditure.

Republicans favor doing more but face strong, determined opposition from Democrats and their allies, the teachers unions.
