WARD: The most recent thing I’ve seen was John McCain versus Ann Kirkpatrick who’s the Democrat challenger from the northeastern part of Arizona, and it was 37 to 38 percent, with McCain at 38 but very, very close; which doesn’t bode well, I don’t think, for Republicans if we want to keep that seat. So I think that that truly shows people are out looking for an alternative to Senator McCain and some are even willing to consider a very liberal Democrat rather than consider him.

HUANG: Wow. Okay. So, to begin at the beginning here, can you give us a very brief biography? Tell us about yourself?

WARD: Sure. In a nutshell, I am a military wife. I am a mom of three awesome kids. I’m a family physician by trade. I only work in the emergency department now in rural Arizona, and I’m a former Arizona state senator. And I’m running for the United States Senate.

HUANG: Nice. What branch was your husband in?

WARD: He’s still in now but he enlisted in the Air Force right after high school and has stayed in ever since. And now he’s in the Air National Guard. He happens to be the state air surgeon in Arizona now.

HUANG: Okay. But not enlisted? Because he’s an officer.

WARD: No. Now he’s gone up.  He became an officer during medical school. Right? During medical school? Yeah, during medical school, and has worked his way up from, you know, the lowest of the enlisted ranks up to O-6. He’s a colonel. Full bird.

HUANG: Oh nice. I did not know that.

WARD: Yeah. I’m proud of him.

HUANG: So, um, what motivated you to run against John McCain?

WARD: Well, lots of things. You know, I think that thirty years in Washington is way too long for anybody. I’m a supporter of term limits and, I have pledged myself that I wouldn’t stay more than two terms. Twelve years is a long time in Washington, DC. It’s a enough time to get some things accomplished, get some things started and then be ready to pass the torch on to the next generation of people who are studying and learning right now, who will have the abilities and the stamina and the energy necessary to continue our path, you know, our country on the right path. I am a proponent of small government and low taxes and low regulations, much less regulations, a strong military, personal responsibility and the Constitution. And what I’ve seen from John McCain, especially over the last several years is that he’s a big-government, big-spending Republican  who doesn’t listen to his constituents, who has lost the, the ability to remember who he works for.
