The Right Resistance: Slimy Serpent Liz Cheney reemerges to alter the 2024 GOP dynamic
At the mid-point of May, it’s apparent the more things change the more they stay the same.
Or, more succinctly, the more the calendar changes, the more it’s evident that former President Donald Trump is gaining strength in his quest to reclaim the Republican Party’s presidential nomination – and ultimately, to make a triumphal return to the White House. New opinion surveys emerge every week, but they universally seem to show the same thing: Trump with a big lead.
Solid Trump supporters welcome the statistical assurance while unswayable Trump enemies search helplessly for untried weapons to halt the avalanche. Objective observers might even call the poor blighted political souls desperate. One shining example was a TV spot shown in New Hampshire last week during Trump’s CNN town hall program, sponsored by an old (hag) antagonist who’s all-but offered to throw herself in front of the Trump train to prevent it from heading back towards the nation’s capital.
In an article titled “Liz Cheney launches new ad in New Hampshire attacking Trump”, Julie Mueller reported at The Hill:
“Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has launched a campaign ad in New Hampshire warning 2024 voters against backing former President Trump. ‘Donald Trump has proven he is unfit for office. Donald Trump is a risk America can never take again,’ Cheney says in a voice-over atop clips of Trump and the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
“Cheney, who was on the House select committee that probed Jan. 6, knocked Trump for his actions around the 2020 election, which he lost to now-President Biden.
“’Donald Trump is the only president in American history who has refused to guarantee the peaceful transfer of power. He lost the election and he knew it. He betrayed millions of Americans by telling them the election was stolen. He ignored the rulings of dozens of courts,’ she said in the video. ‘Rather than accept his defeat, he mobilized a mob to come to Washington and March on the Capitol. Then he watched on television while the mob attacked law enforcement, invaded the Capitol and hunted the vice president,’ Cheney said.”
Blah, blah, blah. Nothing to see here. Granted, Cheney is as about as close to a one-trick pony as there is in national politics these days – January 6! January 6! January 6! – her blather isn’t winning over new converts to the anti-Trump cause. Perhaps Liz would be better served by sponsoring an ad saying, “January 5th was peaceful but the day after, Trump the evil warlock commanded his brain-numbed forces to defile America” or something like that.
One thing’s for sure – Cheney is one of the least popular political figures in America today. And no matter what she does, it more than likely won’t change the direction of history.
Another poll came out last week showing Trump’s GOP primary lead growing to ridiculous levels (40 points?). Is the race over? I wouldn’t say so, but it’s got to be discouraging for the Trump haters like Cheney to recognize the writing on the wall. Liz probably thinks it’s Wyoming ’22 all over again -- a nightmare that just won’t cease. One poll in and of itself wouldn’t indicate anything, though it’s got to be tough for Ron DeSantis’s people to find new and novel ways to explain the hypothetical reasons why Trump’s lead keeps growing when every news outlet, establishment media or otherwise, regularly mentions the 2024 race as being down to Trump and DeSantis. In other words, it’s not as though Trump is romping through the GOP field as though there weren’t any other competitors – or at least major ones.
I can’t help but think if there were another “serious” Republican who was considering joining the scrum that the media would pick up on it and start polling that person’s name alongside Trump’s and DeSantis’s. How about Mitt Romney? The 2012 GOP nominee was mentioned prominently in 2016 and I recall there were whispers of a potential “White Knight” Romney candidacy even in 2020. Flip-flopper Mitt is probably the one Republican who could potentially get people talking if he were to start a rumor that he was thinking about a run.
Who else? Jeb Bush? Ted Cruz? Elon Musk (Is he even a Republican? Is he even eligible to be president?) Tucker Carlson? The last name could conceivably do it…
The truth is, similar to the poor souls in the Democrat party, there just isn’t another Republican candidate who could step in today and generate legitimate debate in terms of a national campaign. DeSantis has been the hope for far too long, and the others who’ve either declared (Nikki Haley, Asa Hutchinson, Vivek Ramaswamy, Larry Elder and a bunch of no-names) or have tossed out strong hints that they’re in (Sen. Tim Scott, Mike Pence, Chris Christie) are basically wasting their time.
Mounting a primary campaign is demanding under the best of circumstances, but when you add the person of Donald Trump to the equation, the difficulty mountain becomes way too tall to scale. Think about it: almost all the arguments a new candidate could use to bring Trump down have already been tried – and failed to move the needle.
In no particular order, critics have claimed Trump is too “unpresidential” in his behavior. Then they said that January 6 and its aftermath would erode Trump’s popularity over time. Then the boobirds speculated Trump’s legal troubles (either his current indictment or the multitude of investigations underway) would cause supporters to lose heart and search for another, less controversial leader.
They’ve tried other tacks as well. They’ve said Trump is too old, that suburban women would never back him, that the #NeverTrump gaggle would keep attracting new converts and finally, that people would start listening to the critics. These are many of the same folks who surmised that “nice guy” Biden was unbeatable in 2024 and Democrats would therefore maintain their unsurmountable lead in the all-important electoral college.
None of it has so much as put a dent in Trump’s armor. Meanwhile, time went by and DeSantis presided over victory after victory in Florida and his 2024 standing has only receded. This isn’t the way it was supposed to be and it must have DeSantis’s advisors scratching their heads wondering why the 2022 landslide victor appears to be floundering before the race even picks up steam.
Trump’s enemies have searched for almost eight years now for the proverbial “silver bullet” that would enfeeble the lifelong real estate developer and reality TV star. It hasn’t happened, and currently, it doesn’t look as though it will happen. Does this mean the race is done and the others should just get out – or not run?
There is such a thing as party unity to consider, though with the way things have unfolded, “unity” doesn’t seem possible unless Trump bills himself as the “unity” candidate and invites all the others to join him at one of his rallies as the all-but anointed nominee. Trump isn’t an incumbent but the polls make him seem like one.
Strangely enough, someone like Liz Cheney probably prefers conservatives and Republicans view Trump as an incumbent because then, the fading noise from January 6 could be seen as relevant again. Instead, for people who’ve paid attention, the aftermath from the “tourism riot” has been a travesty of justice and could mark the termination of legitimate political protest in this nation. The way the January 6 prisoners were treated has been nothing short of disgraceful.
Last week, for example, a DC jury convicted members of the Proud Boys group for “seditious conspiracy”, which is loosely defined and was employed by Joe Biden’s in-Justice Department knowing the prosecutors could convict any soul of treason when those sitting in judgement were liberal Democrats from a city that went well over 90% for Joe Biden in 2020.
Cheney and her backers aren’t capable of turning January 6 into a Pearl Harbor-like “Day of Infamy” in the minds of future-focused Americans who care a lot more about what will happen in the next four years rather than dwell on the tragic single day in 2021 when the Electoral Votes were counted. As Tucker Carlson exposed on his program (while he still had it), the “official” narrative of January 6 concocted by Cheney and her ilk left much of the story unreported.
Many persuadable voters still recall how shocked they were on January 6, but they also remain up-to-date on what Joe Biden and the Democrats have done to this country in the time since. The inflation; the debt; the devaluation of their retirement savings; the (lack of) education of their children under the stupid federal COVID lockdowns; the championing of transgender “woke” ideology above traditional culture and religion. The list goes on and on.
Not to mention the fresh revelations surrounding senile Joe and his family. The hypocrisy. The non-stop parade of lies and distortions. The lack of media access to Biden himself to answer questions. The list goes on and on here as well.
Empty suits like Liz Cheney believe they can influence future political choices by dredging up the past, but here’s thinking Americans will be worried about the sorry state of the nation in making their candidate selections for 2024. Donald Trump is trouncing his competition in the polls, and we’re yet to see how the current dynamic will change as the months go on. Stay tuned.
